Amer, the old walled city and the road to Agra

Jaipur in a day, or the whole of Rajasthan from it.

Which fort to climb before the heat lands. What a car and driver costs for a full day. Whether the Taj is worth the pre-dawn start. Reviews of every tour you can book in the Pink City.

How you see it

Jaipur is nine kilometres of walled city and a fort on the ridge. Pick your wheels.

The old city is walkable and the fort is not. Four ways of covering the same ground, what each costs to board, and who each one suits.

Stone and mirror

Amer on the ridge, and four palaces down in the pink.

Amer is a hill fort with a mirrored hall inside it. Below, the City Palace still houses the family, Hawa Mahal is a wall of latticed windows built for the women of the court, and Jal Mahal simply sits in a lake.

Out of the city

Jaipur is the corner of the triangle you can actually get out of.

Agra is four hours east, Ranthambore four hours south, and the Shekhawati painted towns sit north. Book the long ones as a car with a driver, not a seat on a coach.

What it costs

What a day out of Jaipur actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. A guided morning in the old city costs less here than a taxi from most airports.

Under $50

Walking mornings, tuk-tuk circuits, cooking classes and a printing bench for the afternoon.

$50–150

The full day with a car and guide, the Agra run, a single safari drive at Ranthambore.

$150 and up

Multi-day Rajasthan by road, private Golden Triangle circuits and the balloon at dawn.

Only here

Three things Jaipur does that nowhere else quite manages.

Forts and markets are everywhere in north India. A leopard hill inside the city limits, a printing village that still dyes by hand, and a flower market that is finished by breakfast are not.

Twenty minutes from the palace

The Jhalana Leopard Reserve

Jaipur has a scrub forest inside its own ring road with a resident leopard population, and jeeps go in twice a day. Sightings are far from guaranteed, which is the honest part; what is guaranteed is that you are back in the city in time for lunch. Sunrise drives run cooler and quieter than the afternoon ones.

Hand Block Printing

The villages south and west of the city have been carving teak blocks and printing cloth with them for generations, using mud resist and indigo vats sunk into the ground. A workshop puts a block in your hand and lets you register the pattern yourself, which is when you find out how hard it is to keep a repeat straight.

The Sunrise Flower Market

Marigolds arrive by the sackful in the dark and the whole trade is over by about eight in the morning. Walks start in the half-light around the flower and vegetable markets, take in the chai stalls that feed the traders, and get you back before the day heats up.

Book ahead

Four Jaipur bookings that will not wait for you to land.

Most of this city can be arranged over breakfast the day before. These four run on permits, closing days, dawn slots and a workshop calendar that has no interest in your flight times.

  1. 01Golden Triangle & Ranthambore: 4-Day Private Tour from DelhiPark entry is by zone permit and every jeep and canter in each zone is numbered. In season the good zones are gone long before you reach the gate.
  2. 02Skip The Line: Sunrise Taj Mahal & Agra Day Tour From JaipurThe Taj is closed to visitors every Friday, and the sunrise hour is the only one without haze on the marble. The day is chosen before the tour is.
  3. 03SkyWaltz Hot Air Balloon SafariBalloons over Amer fly in the cool half of the year and only at first light, so the flying window is a few hours a day for a few months a year.
  4. 04Private Jaipur Full-Day Tour with Block PrintingThe blocks are cut and the dye vats set for a fixed session, so a printing day runs to the workshop’s calendar rather than yours.
April to June

When Jaipur touches forty-five, the day splits in two.

From April the sandstone is too hot to lean on by ten in the morning and stays that way until the evening. Locals have answered this for three hundred years the same way: be out at first light, then get under stone, into a kitchen, or below ground in a stepwell until the sun comes off the angle.
